Trees are the kindest things we grow’. This has been rightly said as the needs of all the living beings are fulfilled by them. But their depleting number has become a serious issue. To make students aware of this issue and taking initiative towards it,
Van Mahotsav, at its very core, was an attempt to raise awareness for the importance of forests and nature to the human civilization as well as it to the diverse wildlife that calls it home. In present times, Van Mahotsav stands for much more than that. Climate change and the rapidly changing landscape of cities, towns and countryside from clean, green, open spaces to an infrastructure and development layered dystopia. Trees carry out so many functions fundamental to the survival of our species as well as the survival of other species such as animals, birds, insects and microorganisms.
The survival of the human race wouldn’t have been possible without trees.
Van Mahotsav literally stands for ‘Forest' (van) and ‘Festival' (mahotsav) It is a Hindi Word which means ‘Tree Festival’. This tree planting festival is observed annually, over a period of week starting form 1st July to 7th July. It’s is celebrated to raise awareness among the masses about the importance of trees, their plantation conservation. It was initiated in 1950 by K. M. Munshi, the then Union Minister for Agriculture and Food to create an enthusiasm in the mind of the populace for the conservation of forests and planting of trees.
