International Workers’ Day also known as Labour Day will fall on Saturday May 2021. The day which marks the celebration of laborers and the working class worldwide is an annual event taking place on May Day (1st of May). Labour Day is a celebration that honors the labor movement and the implementation of various labor laws as well as contributions made by millions of people. The Labor Day in India is also known as the May Day. May 1 corresponds to the International Workers' Day which is celebrated around the world. It is observed as a national holiday in around 80 countries including India.

At the peak of industrialization at the beginning of the 19th Century,  industrialists used to exploit the labor class and made them work up to 15 hours a day. The workers rose against this exploitation and demanded paid leaves, proper wages and breaks for the workforce.

ORIGIN OF THE LABOUR DAY

The history of the Labour Day dates back to May 1, 1886. On this day, labour unions in the United States of America decided to go on a strike with the demand that workers should not be allowed to work more than 8 hours a day. This strike was followed by a bomb blast in Chicago's Haymarket Square on the 4th of May. This led to the death of several people and police officers. In addition, more than 100 people were injured in the blast.

Although the protests in the U.S. didn't lead to any immediate result, yet it helped establish the 8-hour work day norm in India and other countries in the world. Since then, the Labour Day is observed as the day for parades and demonstrations all around the globe.

HISTORY IN INDIA

Labour Day in India or May Day was first celebrated in Chennai (then known as Madras) on May 1, 1923. The initiative was taken by the Labor Kisan Party of Hindustan. The leader of the party, Comrade Singaravelar arranged two meetings to celebrate this occasion. In India, Labor Day is referred to as Antarrashtriya Shramik Diwas or Kamgar Din.

Labour Kisan Party of Hindustan
LKPH was a political party founded in Madras in 1923 by Singaravelu Chettiar. A major face in the Indian Independence movement, in the South, Chettiar formed the first trade union in India which later became a political party. Although initially under the leadership of Mahatma Gandhi, the party quickly joined the budding communist movement in the country; Chettiar later became one of the founding fathers of the Communist Party of India.

May Day is further linked to several factions and movements for communists and socialist parties in the country.
Incidentally, May 1 is also Maharashtra Day and Gujarat Day, as on this day in 1960, the State of Bombay split into Maharastra and Gujarat, principally on the basis of linguistic difference.

Labour Day or May Day is celebrated all over the world and is a celebration of the working classes that is promoted by the international labour movements. In India if workers have gotten any right, it is because of Dr Ambedkar hence not to remember Dr Ambedkar on Labour Day will be an injustice to […]
