KIIT-IS LIBRARY PRESENTS
BOOKS WILL BREATHE AND TALK!!
Why do you go to the library?? For reading books or magazine, yes! — because they tell stories, gives information. There are books, e-books then; there are audio books also. Ever heard of books you can interact with? Or a Human Library? Human Library is a library of people! it replaces books with human beings. You hope to get lost in a story or be transported into someone else's life.
Human Library, people literally become books to be “read”! A concept originated from Denmark, the Human Library is a combination of two components. Firstly, real physical books stocked at Human Library depots and secondly, the human who serves to be the personification of the book telling its story. In KiiT-ISEvery person has a story to tell, like every student and faculty of KiiT International School to share. We need to have time to sit down and listen to each other’s stories that the bonds of understanding, empathy, and compassion are born.
Now you Can “Borrow” People Instead of Books |
What is it exactly??
The Human Library is an innovative and interactive program that provides a safe and welcoming environment in which participants can learn more about the individuals in their community. The concept is similar to that of a traditional library. If book is read and discussed or shared among like minded readers, the Human Library has people engaging in conversations. Like books, participants of the Human Library can be picked from a list to engage in conversations and share stories on a one on one basis. A couple of readers opting for the same living book or even with a group.
It develops students as learners and prepares them for their role in society as engaged, productive and responsible citizens. The strategy points out though that there are still ongoing incidents of discrimination in our society that require our continuing attention. Incidences such as homophobia, cyber bullying, hate propaganda, racism, religious intolerance and gender-based violence are still evident in our communities and schools.

How Does It Work?
Patrons are invited to become readers by taking a person out on loan for a conversation on the topic/issue that they represent. Conversations are offered to a duration of fifteen-thirty minutes. Readers have the opportunity to borrow a Human Book, participating in one-on-one or small group conversations with the volunteer. Human Libraries provide an opportunity for real and authentic discussion, provoking thinking, reducing prejudices and encouraging understanding. It is an opportunity to focus on the ‘human side’ of information.

What to Expect?
To check out a Human Book, readers will walk up to speak with one of our Librarians. Readers can request which book they wish to speak with. Librarians will collect the book from the Book Depot room and bring them out to meet their reader. Readers and books will have the opportunity to find a comfortable place within the facility to share their stories and engage in authentic, meaningful conversations. Once the book is due back to the library, readers can choose to either renew their same book or check out another book on a different topic.

Apply Human Library skills into Classroom
By creating the KiiT-IS Human Library, I hope to inspire other teachers to think differently about how they engage their students with the curriculum in the digital world. To support student inquiry and to more meaningfully connect students to real life experiences and applied skills, we created the KiiTIS Human Library: "Where breathing books are on loan". This is a "library" of parent, teacher experts and students who are willing to share their knowledge, talents, hobbies, interests and network with our students. Keenly observe the image next to this! you will come to know the importance of the human library in the classroom. We need to teach our students to become knowledge builders, by finding creative ways to introduce students to the ideas which makes them inquirers. Ideas that offer inquiry potential or promise in terms of opportunities that will motivate students to engage in sustained inquiry on their own. It is then our responsibility to be responsive to our students’ learning needs by supporting their creative problem finding and problem solving. Our role is now one of facilitator, skill developer, questioner, collaborator and critical cheerleader as we connect our students to the world using the platform like KiiT-IS Library |
Statement:
KIIT-IS Human Library encourages open and honest conversations as a means to foster understanding, empathy, and compassion. The opinions of each book are unique and not endorsed by the KIIT-IS Human Library:
