Family Reading Challenge

The Family Reading Challenge is a read aloud literacy program for students in grades Nursery – 5. This Summer Reading Challenge encompasses the importance of reading aloud to children past the time they can read independently, some ideas for books to read together, and an easy challenge to enjoy as a family.

Reading just twenty minutes per day builds empathy for others, creates a strong vocabulary, and positively affects and boosts your mental and physical health.

Some Helpful Tips for Read Aloud

Get excited, this is going to be fun!
Read with expression. Make silly sounds, use funny voices. Your child will eat it up.
Point to the pictures and talk about them: “That’s just like our doggy!”
Let your child pick the book, turn the pages – anything to help engage them.
Don’t worry if your child won’t sit still. Squirmy worms are still listening!
Make it a habit – and if at first you don’t succeed, try, try again.

Read 20 Minutes a day for 20 days and foster a lifelong love of Reading

This challenge was created for students to complete with either mom or Dad or even better both!

We want reading aloud 20 minutes every day to be as baked into parenting as eating your vegetables and brushing your teeth — but way more fun than either!
Reading aloud isn’t simply an idea – it has to be a movement. It has to have dedicated believers who see that a small change can have a huge impact.
